Although widely used, conventional structural brain MRI detects clear volume changes
in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) at the symptomatic stage that correlate to widespread
advanced pathologic findings. Alternative metabolic MRI techniques are now increasingly
available on clinical 3T MRI scanners, and sodium 23Na-MRI has been shown to detect
differences in hippocampal signal intensity(SI) between mild AD and aged matched controls
in a small preliminary study with corresponding hippocampal group volume differences.
In this study, we compared 23-Na-SI and volume differences in several Alzheimer’s
associated brain target regions between cognitively normal and mild cognitive impairment
(MCI) older adults.
